Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)

Symptoms:

• Pain during sleep

• Pain and difficulty with grooming and dressing activities

• Pain and difficulty with reaching activities: to the shoulder level, behind the back, and overhead

Types:

• Primary idiopathic adhesive capsulitis

• Secondary adhesive capsulitis (related to systemic disease, such as diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders etc.)

Stages

Stage 1: 0-3mo

• Pain at the end of the motion

• Pain while sleeping

Stage 2: 3-9mo (freezing/painful stage)

• Gradual loss of range of motion

• Increase in pain

Stage 3: 9-15mo(frozen)

• Lost range of motion

• Persistent pain

Stage 4: 15-24 (thawing)

• Decrease in pain

• Increase in range of motion
